Project Overview
Nestled beside a charming 1930s home in Denver, this once‑ordinary yard has been transformed into a colorful, native‑plant garden — a peaceful, “mountain‑meadow” escape perfect for relaxing, entertaining, or simply letting nature flourish. Our goal was to create a vibrant, low‑maintenance landscape rich in pollinator‑friendly plants, natural textures, and seasonal interest.
Design & Planting Highlights
Natural flow & inviting layout: We crafted informal pathways using native flagstone and gravel, gently curving between outdoor living spaces to create a relaxed, organic feel. A newly planted Autumn Blaze maple provides soft, dappled shade over the patio.
Color‑rich native palette: We used a mix of native wildflowers and perennials — including Black Eyed Susans, Rocky Mountain Columbine, native yarrows, lupine, and cone flowers — layering whites, pinks, blues, and purples for a dynamic visual experience throughout the seasons.
Privacy + texture + fragrance: To screen neighboring fences and add texture, we planted taller natives like Russian Sage and Lupine, paired with classic favorites like hydrangeas, Common Lilac, and fragrant Carol Mackie Daphne near seating areas. Soft Lamb’s Ear and architectural Coneflowers add contrast and subtle movement.
Drought‑tolerant, low‑maintenance living: By selecting native Colorado‑adapted plants such as Beardtongue and False Indigo, this garden remains eco‑friendly and thrives with minimal maintenance — ideal for homeowners who want beauty without heavy upkeep.
Result — A Backyard to Love Year‑Round
Today, the “Backyard Whimsy” garden blooms with life — pollinators visit, flowers shift with the seasons, and the home feels reconnected with Colorado’s natural landscape. It’s a space that invites lingering afternoons, quiet mornings, family BBQs, or peaceful evenings under the maple’s shade.
